Set in the South during the 60s and 70s, this family saga follows Robert Rhodes as he reminisces about his life. His childhood had not been a pleasant, innocent experience. Aside from the poverty and endless disappointment his family endured, the boy knew the personal challenges of neglect and abuse.
As an adult, Robert continued to be fettered by his past. Even a religious conversion doesn't resolve his struggles, After realizing the source of his lifelong pain, he confronts his past in a dramatic climax to the story. Not until Robert deals with his past can he be emancipated from it. His new freedom allows him to find the love and success he had always sought.
The Art of Straightening Nails leaves the reader with hope and empowerment in conquering their own barriers to happiness.

It was a wonderfully uplifting story that takes you from the less-than-happy life that shaped a young boy into a man. The growth he experienced through pain, anger, and finally resolution is inspiring and touches your heart.

This incredible book, on the surface, is about one man's journey in life. Depending on the reader's perspective, it is about so much more. Maybe it's about racism. Maybe it's about forgiveness, in general. So many possibilities including love, forgiveness, betrayal, mental illness, self-worth, and judgment. Whatever you need to hear, there is a message for you. I feel so uplifted and encouraged by reading the content of this incredible book. Read it! You will be glad you did.

Normally I don't read a book like this, but the title was intriguing. In the beginning, I wasn't sure where the author was going, but about the fifth chapter, I couldn't put it down. This was a great read!!
